What is Plasma Energy?

We first need to understand how plasma energy works, as it differs from lasers, RF techniques and ultrasound procedures. Plasma is often considered the fourth state of matter, which results from energized gas. This (ionized) gas has been discovered to improve the tone and appearance of skin with significant results. A specialized device, the plasma pen, is used to deliver the ionized gas (the plasma) into your skin’s dermal layer.

How Does Plasma Pen Therapy Renew Skin?

Plasma energy develops at the tip of the device, charging the air just above the skin. A tiny arc, similar to a minute lightning bolt, is created between the tip of the pen and the skin surface, although the instrument never actually touches the skin. There is no blood or open channel on the skin’s surface. The plasma energy arc interacts biologically with the surface layer of skin, generating a channel of heat that travels down to the dermal layer. The heat charge damages skin cells in its path, which triggers an immediate contraction. Visually, a small dark dot forms on the surface of the skin. When multiple plasma arcs are introduced to the skin, each dot of energy transfer will cause some degree of tightening. When these dots are laid out in grid-like patterns covering a targeted facial location, they work together in a cumulative manner to tighten the skin to an even greater degree.

 

The heat transfer triggers your skin’s natural healing process. The underlying fibroblasts within the dermal skin layer are stimulated to produce fresh cells.  New collagen and elastin, which help to maintain the skin’s elasticity and minimize the appearance of wrinkles, is produced.

How Long Before Full Benefits are Evident?

Plasma treatment requires only an application of topical anesthesia about 1 hour prior to the procedure at LaserMed. This allows for a very comfortable experience for most patients. The treatment takes between 45 minutes to an hour to complete, depending on the area. Although each patient’s situation is unique, typically a larger area such as a full neck or stretch marks will be more time-intensive than an upper lip. At the conclusion of your treatment, tiny circular dark crusts will correspond to each plasma arc created. We will recommend a topical ointment to protect and moisturize the crusty dots. Spots will begin to lighten, and then fall off during the first week of healing. Slight redness may remain for several weeks and the use of sunscreen is a must.
